A genealogy parable–<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Boston merchant sold all his possessions to outfit for the gold fields.\u00a0 He had been told that the rivers were filled with great gold nuggets.\u00a0 So he spent days on end panning for wealth, but all he acquired was a large pile of rocks.\u00a0 Broke and discouraged, he sat on the ground and wept.<\/p>\n

Along came a grizzly old prospector who stopped to see what was wrong.\u00a0 “Son,” he said, “You just have to know where to look.\u00a0 Patient gathering of flecks of gold has brought me great wealth.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the flecks of gold received by my Genealogy Library Center, Inc.<\/strong><\/em> are many collections of genealogy that would have been thrown away because the material didn’t match collection policies of research libraries.\u00a0 Or the children had no room to care for the documents.\u00a0 Or those who cleaned out the home of a deceased genealogist did not know what to do with all the stuff.<\/p>\n

Saturday, UPS delivered six boxes of British parish register extracts made by Bertram Tuft Norman, a British genealogist.\u00a0 I opened Box #2 because it was on top of the pile.<\/p>\n

These are the original extracts from those parish registers from which the International Genealogical Index (IGI)<\/strong> <\/em>entries were made. Now those online entries are available at http:\/\/familysearch.org<\/a><\/p>\n

Here’s the story<\/strong>\u2014the original extracts sent to Salt Lake City\u00a0 were copied<\/span> in pencil on notebook pages by Mr. Norman many years ago from the English parish registers.\u00a0 These entries were re-extracted<\/span> onto cards.\u00a0 Then the cards were typed<\/em> into the computer file.\u00a0 So you get the entries 3-times<\/strong> removed<\/strong> from the parish registers.<\/p>\n

The parish register entries were usually noted<\/span> on scrap paper (or equivalent of the time) when the event occurred\u2014or may be written down<\/span> later from memory by the parish vicar who officiated at the event or his parish clerk.\u00a0 Later they were copied<\/span>\u00a0 neatly into the book which the church kept for that purpose.\u00a0 This puts the IGI entries 5-times removed<\/strong> from the event itself.\u00a0 Is it any wonder that you have errors?<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Genealogy Library Center, Inc.<\/strong><\/em> is grateful to house these valuable extracts which are 3<\/strong> times closer<\/strong> to the original event\u2014for they would have been thrown away eventually by Brigham Young University Library Family History Center<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Besides, these entries come from parishes which are close to my own ancestral home in England and may even include my ancestors among the pieces of paper<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
