    Land and Property Sources that link–<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Tax delinquent lists\u2014<\/b>especially in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia<\/li>\n
    2. Powers of Attorney\u2014<\/b>recorded in state of filing and<\/span> state of interest\/residence<\/li>\n
    3. Signatures\u2014<\/b>match original signatures on deeds, wills, personal papers, family Bible pages, passenger lists<\/li>\n
    4. Property Descriptions\u2014will usually be the same <\/b>on deeds bought and sold, land bequeathed in wills or land descending by law, tax rolls and rent rolls, equity court minutes, claims and supporting documents, land surveys (may contain a map of the land with the description in calls)<\/li>\n
    5. Dog Tax Lists\u2014<\/b>South Carolina kept dog tax lists; many Blacks had dogs.\u00a0 1865 Slave name; 1866-67 Freed name.\u00a0 <\/b>Use with probate inventories of white or black family who owned slaves before 1865. And some 1850-60 slave censuses where individual slaves are named.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      How Is Land Acquired?<\/b><\/p>\n

      1. Original title to land\u2014<\/b>headright grant, bounty grant, patent, council grant, state government grant\u2014VA,<\/b> MD, PA in Southwestern PA,<\/span> VA and MD grants overlap); VA<\/b> in KY and OH<\/span>, including bounty lands; VA<\/b> claimed land rights in parts of North Carolina<\/span>, including bounty lands; SC<\/b> in North Carolina,<\/span> especially along the boundary line; KY<\/b> and TN grants overlap<\/span>, especially along the boundary line; NC<\/b> in Tennessee,<\/span> including bounty lands; FL<\/b> in\u00a0 GA, AL, MS (in West Florida<\/span>); GA<\/b> in AL, MS, LA (in Yazoo territory<\/span>)\u00a0 \u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n
      2. Subsequent transfer of title to land\u2014<\/b>deed\/conveyance from prior owner, tax sale, inheritance by will (testate), inheritance by descent (intestate, without a will) <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          2. Rectangular System\u2014<\/b>dates officially from 1787.\u00a0 Uses numbered sections, townships, ranges, and principal meridians.\u00a0 Some use of this sysem befo<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Indexes are Essential Search Tools:\u00a0 What trips you up is not realizing you are searching an index!<\/b><\/p>\n

            1. Grantor\/Grantee; Mortgagor\/Mortgagee <\/b><\/li>\n
            2. Reverse or cross index<\/b><\/li>\n
            3. Some clerks include etal<\/span> entries in each alpha section; some clerks only put the first name or initials<\/b><\/li>\n
            4. Some indexes are actually indexes to indexes<\/span>, watch carefully<\/b><\/li>\n
            5. Indexes can be made by genealogists, societies, county clerks, state clerks, law firms, title companies, gas and oil exploration businesses<\/b><\/li>\n
            6. Original indexes were made in large ledgers<\/b><\/li>\n
            7. Third-party indexes are usually on cards or computer databases<\/b>
              \n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
