{"id":259,"date":"2009-03-16T17:30:01","date_gmt":"2009-03-17T00:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arleneeakle.com\/wordpress\/?p=259"},"modified":"2009-03-16T17:34:55","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T00:34:55","slug":"ssdi-a-mystery-in-need-of-a-solution-with-a-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arleneeakle.com\/wordpress\/2009\/03\/16\/ssdi-a-mystery-in-need-of-a-solution-with-a-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"SSDI:  A Mystery in Need of a Solution with a Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;Problem:\u00a0 A person has died, according to a vaguely  written\u00a0published obituary, which\u00a0neglects to include a location of death.\u00a0\u00a0  Ancestry.com has the death on its site, citing &#8220;Social Security&#8221; as the source. <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Rootsweb\u00a0codes their SSDI information\u00a0that a <strong>death certificate has been  seen <\/strong>by someone somewhere.For &#8220;place&#8221; Rootsweb codes it as &#8220;FO.&#8221;\u00a0 But nowhere  could we find\u00a0an actual\u00a0place of death.\u00a0 Nor a definition of &#8220;FO.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The U.S. home county has no death certificate. <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">None listed  in the home state death index. The home county vital records clerk said to\u00a0go  to the State Department website, because if no state is involved, the U.S. State Department might  have records or be handling it.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The State Department site referred me back to the Social  Security Administration themselves.\u00a0In speaking to\u00a0Social Security\u00a0by phone,  they could find\u00a0no place of death either.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Social Security suggestion that this individual may  have died outside of the US fits with lifestyle, and is not outside the realm of  possibility. <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">An explanation for the &#8220;viewed&#8221; death certificate is that Consular  officers\u00a0 abroad might have seen one\u00a0since deaths of American nationals abroad  are handled by them and they get involved with personal effects, etc., to an  extent depending upon circumstances. <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We have been unable to find any information on whether  this is indeed what happened.\u00a0\u00a0At present no one seems to know the answer to the  place of death or be able to offer a web site\/data base\/publication\/hotline\u00a0to  determine what the circumstances  were.&#8221;\u00a0 Elaine Allen<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Anyone who can solve this mystery:<\/strong> 1) identify what &#8220;FO&#8221; refers to.\u00a0 2) has a strategy that could verify the death, so a death certificate can be issued.\u00a0 3)\u00a0 provide information leading to a death certificate or proof of death&#8211;will receive a FREE book of their choosing from my own publication list.\u00a0 Your favorite genealogist, Arlene Eakle\u00a0 http:\/\/www.arleneeakle.com<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">PS Tune in tomorrow on my NEW Tennessee blog, 17 Mar 2009<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Problem:\u00a0 A person has died, according to a vaguely written\u00a0published obituary, which\u00a0neglects to include a location of death.\u00a0\u00a0 Ancestry.com has the death on its site, citing &#8220;Social Security&#8221; as the source.
